Get up! No. Literally
Updated: Jun 4
Movement is important as this impacts our wellbeing! In the article, 10 reasons to get moving today, the Mayo Clinic mentions that movement decreases feelings of anxiety, improves brain functionality, and lowers the risk of chronic diseases (2024).
So why is this important?
I'm glad you asked, read on to find out!
Targets anxiety and depression
Our bodies and moods depend on the environment around us; thus, by changing the things we can control, like moving more, we will see improvements in things like our moods! In the article Suicide Data and Statistics, the CDC states "suicide is one of the leading cause of death in the United states" (2025). That being said, movement is an important part of the day to decrease anxiety and depression through going outside, boosting the vitamin D, and going for a walk; which may all decrease suicide rates! Win, win, saving lives all over!
Improves brain functionality
Did you know our brain requires adequate blood flow to work properly? What's one way to improve blood flow? Yes, you've guessed it, exercise or movement! Grace McGregor states, "Exercise induces good blood flow to deliver all the nutrients required to carry out the brain’s job, while it also increases production molecules important to brain function, including memory" (2021). Does this mean you'll site the whole constitution by heart tomorrow if you increase movement today? Probably not, but I'm sure you could work up to it if you study hard and move around more! Seriously, if you've been finding yourself in the midst of brain fog at work, school, or home, try seeing what movement will do for you!
Diabetes and Heart Disease, be gone!
Well, Maybe not gone, but decreasing chances of development or decreasing complications! Did you know most comorbidities are reversible and preventable through improving your diet and movement?! Of course, talk to your doctor before starting exercise if you have a heart condition, but I encourage you to start the talk! The Mayo Clinic states, " Exercise can help people with long-lasting conditions cope with symptoms and improve their overall health...[R]egular physical activity can help make life better for people who have them. A complete program includes exercise that raises the heart rate, builds muscle and helps keep joints moving well". This highlights the importance of movement activities, along with examples of what an exercise can look like.
Besides taking a 3 mile walk with a cup of Joe in your hand, don't forget the water and this blog! A good read for that stop under a tree is always a great way to start or end your day!
Thank you for hanging around and reading how movement can improve your life!
